About Us

Rural Transportations Solutions is a community-based team that aims to propose realistic, affordable and sustainable transportation options to help solve rural Ottawa’s transportation deficiencies.

The Rural Transportations Solutions Group aims to propose a range of transportation solutions for rural communities in the City of Ottawa. This group is community-based and was formed in response to the needs voiced by rural community members.  Its initial activities will comprise collecting information regarding rural transportation needs and then analyzing that information for patterns and indications of some innovative solutions.

The solutions that we are seeking for rural transportation are meant to be sustainable, affordable  and realistic solutions that fall in line with the priorities of the Master Transportation Plan and the New Official Plan. As we move forward on this project we plan to keep all four rural ward Councillors informed on the process and invite their support.

Our group has conducted two surveys of community members in order to collect information regarding residents' priorities and transportation needs. We have also held a series of focus groups in each rural ward.

Some Ways Ahead

Some recommended actions leading toward improving Transportation Options for residents of rural Ottawa:·

  • Participate in the development of the TMP
  • Engage with OC Transpo to ensure that its 5-Year Roadmap applies the Rural Equity and Inclusion Lens.
  • Recommend the City sponsor a Masters Degree student to investigate the opportunities for Public Transit in rural Ottawa.
  • Request OC Transpo engage with the Service Providers for our Rural Partnership Routes with the aim of re-establishing these routes.
  • Recommend the conduct of  trial to modify the Free Shopping Bus timing and route to provide fuller opportunities for clients to connect with the OC Transpo system.
  • Recommend the conduct of three pilot On-Demand routes in rural Ottawa:
  • Pilot 1 to focus on connecting a number of smaller villages to a larger village that is, in essence, a “15-Minute Village.”
  • Pilot 2 to focus on connecting a number of villages to an OC Transpo node.
  • Pilot 3 to connect workers to Carp Road Corridor businesses.
