How does an On-Demand bus system work?
Municipal buses have typically operated on a system based on fixed routes, fixed timings, and fixed stops. An on-demand system introduces efficiencies based on the system’s ability to quickly plan a specific a bus trip that will meet the destination needs of the passengers at that time. Some on-demand systems operate with a fixed route but variable timings while others incorporate the option of varying the route to suit the specific demand at that time. Requests for a pick-up are submitted by phone or internet and a computer app quickly determines the best route to meet the current demands and notifies the prospective passenger of the pick-up location and time. See HERE for a video explaining the Belleville On-Demand bus system for their rural industrial area. Return to the FAQ Home Page |
